Next generation heavy rescue truck to bolster VICSES Wedderburn Unit
Volunteers at the VICSES Wedderburn Unit are now better able to support their local community during emergencies, with the unit set to receive one of 57 brand new next generation (NextGen) heavy rescue trucks (HRT).
Key features of the vehicle include enhanced ergonomic design, LED and cabin door lighting, a passenger facing iPad mount, wind speed detection capability, dedicated storage for food and hydration for extended operations, a chainsaw work bench and improved locker stowage for easy access to equipment.
The NextGen HRT has been designed by a VICSES fleet working group, custom built to serve the local volunteers’ needs. It will also have a lifespan of 15 years.
A prototype of the vehicle has visited VICSES units across the state throughout October and November, enabling members to view the new features and ask any questions of the design team.
With the vehicle now nearing completion stage, the current prototype will go through comprehensive durability testing using a purpose-built test track and facilities, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
The reinvigorated VICSES Wedderburn Unit is currently home to 14 volunteers and in the last financial year, received 98 requests for assistance. Production of the new truck for Wedderburn will begin next year.
