More than a century of service celebrated at VICSES Yarrawonga Unit
A host of dedicated volunteers in Victoria’s north were this week celebrated for their continued commitment to the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) and their local community.
A selection of VICSES Yarrawonga Unit volunteers were honoured at a local ceremony on 30 October, acknowledged for periods of service spanning from five to 45 years with their local unit.
Among award recipients was Desmond O’Meara ESM OAM, the former VICSES Yarrawonga Unit Controller who was recognised for his tireless commitment over almost half a century to supporting his local area.
As a well-respected mentor for local members and current Unit Controller Jason Forber, Desmond was also awarded a National Medal (3rd clasp) acknowledging his willingness to deploy in support of communities across Australia during their time of need, while fellow volunteer Gerald Nunn received his 1st clasp recognising 25 years of service.
Known throughout the Yarrawonga community for his welcoming and friendly nature, Gerald is well-regarded as a key driver of the unit’s culture, which has seen active membership grow to more than 30 in recent years.
An increased focus on community engagement has also boosted member retention, led by Deputy Controller (Members and Community Engagement Facilitator) Laura Nish.
As part of Wednesday’s ceremony, Laura was presented a VICSES Excellence in Community Engagement Award for her dedication to the Yarrawonga Unit and wider township, a result of her ongoing efforts to promote VICSES involvement in local initiatives and community projects.
Other volunteers acknowledged for service included Richard Franklin, Jason Thomas, Jason Forber and Samuel Nunn (15 years), Robert Russo (10 years) and Chloe Forber, Cory Seccull and Thomas Leslie (five years).
Jason Thomas, Jason Forber, Rohan Williams, Richard Franklin and Graham Wilson were also awarded National Medals for their service with VICSES.
