Introduction to Emergency Management (PUAEMR038 Working in an emergency management context) is a competency based training course conducted by VICSES.

This hands-on course is delivered over two days with a mixture of theory and practical scenario activities. Participants who complete this course will be issued with nationally recognised unit of competency from the Public Safety Training Package.

Aim:

The aim of the program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills of the emergency management roles and responsibilities of relevant government and community agencies in Victoria. The program also assists in familiarisation with the general concepts and structure of emergency management.

On completion of this program the participant should be able to apply these broad principles of emergency management to their workplace.

Topics covered include:

  • Emergency management concepts and principles.

  • Emergency management structure and organisational responsibilities.

  • Prevention and preparedness.

  • Risk management.

  • Emergency management planning.

  • Information management.

  • Emergency response (including relief).

  • Emergency recovery.


Introduction to Emergency Management (IEM) courses will be scheduled across the Emergency Management Regions throughout the year. As courses are scheduled this information will be shared through local networks by VICSES regional representatives and the dates and locations will be published below.

Who should attend?

This course is primarily made available for individuals from agencies with emergency management responsibilities listed in the State Emergency Management Plan (SEMP). However, it is also recognised that many private organisations, government, statutory authorities, volunteer and community organisations or emergency service organisations play important roles in emergency management and participants from these organisations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Please complete the enrolment form below to nominate for a course in your region.

VICSES Enrolment Form 

  • Please make yourself aware of your agency's policies regarding approval processes for nominations prior to submitting your nomination.

  • To nominate for a scheduled IEM course please complete this VICSES Enrolment Form.

  • Once completed, please send the form to the VICSES Training team at training@ses.vic.gov.au 

  • Payment instructions will be sent to participants once the nomination form has been completed

Refund policy

VICSES-initiated postponement or cancellation: 

Two options are available if courses are postponed or cancelled and fees have been paid:

  • No action. Payment will be held by VICSES who will contact the participant about rescheduling onto another course.

  • Participants can contact accounts@ses.vic.gov.au to seek a full refund

Participant withdrawal: 

  • Participants who withdraw 5 business days, or more, prior to course commencement will receive 100% refund. 

  • Within 5 business days organisations may nominate to have another participant attend provided they promptly submit an additional VICES External Enrolment Form so that the new participants details can be appropriately recorded. No refund will be provided.

VICSES reserves the right to charge agencies/organisations for participants that cancel within 24 hours or do not attend without giving notice.
